Men’s Health Month: Why Modern Men Need a More Holistic Approach to Wellbeing

June marks Men's Health Month, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness around the physical and mental health challenges men face while encouraging positive lifestyle habits that support long-term wellbeing.

For many years, conversations around men's health focused primarily on exercise, weight management and annual health check-ups. While these remain important, modern research shows that health is influenced by a much broader range of factors. Sleep quality, nutrition, stress management, social connection, recovery and even skincare can all contribute to how we feel, perform and age.

At MÄNN Skincare, we recently brought many of these themes together through our MÄNN IN MOTION community event. Combining movement, recovery and meaningful conversation, the event reflected a simple belief: taking care of yourself should extend beyond the gym and become part of everyday life.

The State of Men's Health

Studies consistently show that men are less likely than women to engage in preventive healthcare, discuss health concerns openly or seek support when facing physical or mental health challenges.

At the same time, modern lifestyles place increasing demands on men. Long working hours, frequent travel, disrupted sleep, chronic stress and sedentary habits can all impact energy levels, recovery, cardiovascular health and overall wellbeing.

The encouraging news is that meaningful improvements often come from small, consistent habits rather than dramatic lifestyle changes.

Men's Health Month is also an important reminder to prioritise preventive healthcare. Routine health screenings and regular conversations with qualified healthcare professionals can help identify potential concerns early and support better long-term health outcomes.

Movement Is One of the Most Powerful Health Tools Available

Regular physical activity remains one of the most effective ways to support long-term health.

Research has shown that exercise can help:

  • Support cardiovascular health

  • Improve insulin sensitivity

  • Maintain healthy body composition

  • Enhance mood and cognitive performance

  • Reduce stress levels

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Support healthy ageing

Current recommendations suggest adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week alongside regular strength training.

Importantly, movement does not need to be extreme. Walking, cycling, resistance training, swimming and recreational sports can all provide significant health benefits when performed consistently.

Recovery Deserves the Same Attention as Training

Many men focus heavily on training while overlooking the importance of recovery.

Recovery is where adaptation occurs. Without sufficient recovery, performance, mood, concentration and overall wellbeing can suffer.

Some of the most impactful recovery habits include:

  • Prioritising 7–9 hours of sleep per night

  • Maintaining consistent sleep and wake times

  • Staying hydrated

  • Managing stress levels

  • Taking regular movement breaks throughout the day

  • Allowing adequate recovery between intense training sessions

Sleep, in particular, plays a critical role in physical and cognitive recovery. Consistently poor sleep has been associated with impaired performance, reduced concentration and increased risk of long-term health concerns.

Nutrition Supports More Than Physical Performance

Nutrition is often discussed in terms of appearance, but its influence extends far beyond aesthetics.

A balanced diet rich in whole foods can support:

  • Energy production

  • Immune function

  • Muscle recovery

  • Cognitive performance

  • Healthy skin function

Many health professionals recommend focusing on:

  • Vegetables and fruits

  • Lean protein sources

  • Healthy fats

  • Fibre-rich carbohydrates

  • Adequate hydration

Rather than searching for quick fixes, sustainable dietary habits tend to produce the most meaningful long-term results.

One aspect of men's health that receives far less attention than it deserves is social wellbeing.

Research has linked strong social connections with improved mental health, greater resilience and better overall quality of life.
